Dermal fillers come with many benefits and are a great option for many people who wish to undo some of the visible effects that aging has had on their bodies, but many patients are unhappy with the temporary results and risks associated with having chemicals injected into their face, making fat injections a great alternative.
The fat injection is a cosmetic procedure used to provide increased volume, reduce the appearance of visible fine lines and wrinkles, and provide an overall healthier, youthful complexion. This treatment uses fat that has been removed from another designated area of the patient where there may be a presence of excess fat cells and uses the removed fat as a type of dermal filler to treat the facial skin as an anti-aging procedure. The fat is often taken from either the buttocks or abdomen through a process of liposuction, and then essentially used as a graft by being transferred into the face. Fat injection treatment is considered to be a minor surgical procedure and is more invasive than the administration of classic dermal fillers such as Juvederm or Botox, but offers much longer-lasting results than any other dermal filler option.
Most patients can expect to start seeing the results develop within 8 weeks and will achieve the final results within three to 6 months. The results are not immediate because only around 50% to 70% of the fat cells that were injected back into the face will survive, the other 30% to 50% will die, taking some time to be removed from the area and processed by the body as waste. However, the fat cells that survive will not die unless they are purposefully destroyed through another type of cosmetic treatment, so while the final results take a little longer to fully develop than many other dermal fillers, the fat cells that survive will never dissolve back into the body offering more permanent results. With fat injections, the provider will inject more fat cells into the skin than what would typically be seen with other dermal fillers since such a large percentage of the fat cells will be reabsorbed into the body to ensure that enough volume will be provided through each treatment. It is possible that once the final results have been realized from one treatment, the patient and/or specialist will wish to repeat the treatment if a lower percentage of the fat cells survived the transfer than anticipated.
Fat injections work very similarly to dermal fillers once the fat cells have been extracted through liposuction and briefly processed for purification for transfer of the cells, frequently being used to reverse the effects of aging on the skin. The newly transferred fat cells are very effective at filling in fine lines and wrinkles through a plumping and tightening effect. It is also very effective at providing increased volume to the cheeks and lips, as well as filling in the area under the eyes, and can even be used to reshape the nose or add definition to the jawline. Since it provides a beautiful plumping and volumizing effect wherever injected on the face, fat injections work to naturally tighten the skin offering a more youthful appearance.
When using transferred fat cells in place of traditional dermal fillers, patients can enjoy their beautiful results for far longer because the body does not just naturally dissolve the fat cells if they have successfully grafted into their new home in the body. So, unless the new fat cells are purposefully destroyed through another treatment or procedure, the results provided through a fat injection procedure are as long-lasting as possible. That being said, aging and gravity will continue to affect the skin as time passes, so while the reinjected fat cells will not dissolve or disappear from the areas in which they have successfully been transferred, fine lines, wrinkles, loss of volume, and minor skin laxity will start to take effect again eventually. These effects can be further postponed following the fat injection procedure with good skincare habits through sufficient hydration and SPF protection from sun damage.
